This is (obviously) a blog archive from a few years ago. Enjoy!!
This past weekend was Tax Free Weekend here in Virginia.. So, of course, I had to completely screw up my overly-strict budget and take advantage of clothes shopping without having to give Uncle Sam a cut. A friend and I actually got up at a decent hour on Sunday morning to travel out to the Leesburg Premium Outlets, about a half hour from where I live. After a few hours of shopping, we grabbed lunch and since we were already out in the country, took advantage of its surroundings and hit up a local winery… Oh, and rest assured, readers.. Winery of the Week will be returning on a somewhat consistent basis soon… It’s been way too hot to go “wining” until recently. We’re finally experiencing a bit of a cool down–thank God!
Tarara Winery in Leesburg, Virginia is one of the most gorgeous I’ve been to! I almost felt like I was going camping (and I, for once, mean that in a good way), driving up the windy gravel driveway, following several signs to finally make it to a parking lot. We had to walk up a long wooden walkway before finally making it to the wine tasting room, which looked like it was built in to the side of a mountain. Gorgeous!
The tasting consisted of almost all dry wines, which was fine by me, even though it is sometimes fun to try dessert wines.
My favorites? The Neveah Red, which of course, was the most expensive on the list.. Grrr… I hate when that happens… And, surprisingly, the Rose 2010… I’m usually not a Rose fan, and frequently make fun of my friends who drink White Zin… Not OK… But this Rose was, I learned, prepared French style, giving it a dry oakey taste, almost resembling an oakey chardonnay. The 2009 Charval was the runner-up mainly because of how indescribable it is. Let me just say that it’s a white blend that makes for a perfect summer wine.
