I seriously find it amazing how many thing are out there as a way to make extra cash. VIPKid is a company that pairs you with kids in China, and you teach them English over the Internet. VIPKids gives you the lesson plan, so you just show up and teach what they tell you to teach! While VIPKids might not be for everybody, I love the idea that you can earn money without leaving your home.. And, honestly, the compensation is pretty good! You just sign up for the times you’re available, parents in China can book your slot, and you’re good to go!
For this interview, I met with my sister, who lives in Florida and loves this little side hustle. When I was visiting her a few months ago, I overheard her doing some of her lessons, and, while she sounded ridiculous ;), she seemed to really enjoy it!
What is your day job?
I am an RN by trade.
How did you start teaching for VIPKID?
I only work 3 days a week as an RN and I was looking to make some extra money without having to pick up more shifts at the hospital. I spoke with my sister’s friend and she told me about VIPKID and it sounded like fun!
What is your favorite aspect of teaching for VIPKID?
I love the kids! They are so entertaining! After a few months of working with VIPKID, I have students that I see on a regular basis. I love catching up with them and hearing about their days. I have been able to meet a lot of my kids’ pets, I know about their vacations, they tell me about how they celebrate Chinese New Year, and their cities. It is fun to know them on a personal level.
Do you have any fun stories?
I have a lot of fun with all of my kids! A lot of them are hilarious! I asked one of my students what they know about Americans and he responded “Ummm… well… they eat a lot of unhealthy food and they’re fat.” I had to laugh! Another one of my students asked how many fat people I know. Apparently they are very intrigued with the idea of heavy people….
How would someone get started teaching with VIPKid?
All you need is a Bachelors Degree in any subject, experience with kids, a computer with a webcam, a headset (iPhone headset will do!), and a sense of humor. The best part? Work as much or as little as you want! There are NO minimum hours!
