Whew, it’s been a while since I’ve done the Side Hustle Spotlight and they’re still some of my all time favorite posts. For today’s post, I interviewed a girl that I’ve known for pretty much my entire life, Jackie Gannon. She grew up down the street from me and is my sister’s age. She’s not only an ambitious 9-5er but also has a successful dog grooming side hustle. I loved learning about how she created her business, got certified and attracts clients.
I’ll note that if you’re not from Cleveland, some of her local references might not make a whole lot of sense, but if you are and you’re looking for a dog groomer, look no further.
If you’re looking to create a dog grooming side hustle, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is. As someone who uses dog groomers here in DC on a regular basis, I know it’s a safe business to start because it isn’t going anywhere!
Anyway, enjoy today’s post!
What is your side hustle?
My side hustle is dog grooming!
What is your 9-5?
My 9-5 is working in home providing applied behavior analysis therapy to children on the autism spectrum.
How has having a side income changed your family finances?
It just helps me have more freedom and spending money especially for the trips we like to take!
What does your daily schedule look like (when it’s not a pandemic) with juggling a day job and a side job?
My daily schedule is usually bouncing between 3-4 different houses for my kiddos and then I usually fit in a [grooming] group in the evenings around 5:30. I get done grooming around 7:30 and then relax for the night finally!
Is there any certification for dog grooming? How did you learn?
I did get certified at a school called “Diamond Cut Dog Grooming” that’s right on Route 18 in Fairlawn. It’s run by an awesome older couple who run a grooming business and train us with their clients. They were wonderful and I learned a lot. It was a 6 week class on Saturdays for me to accompany my busy full time schedule, typically you can knock it out in 2 weeks Monday-Friday.
How do you find clients?
I find most clients through friends, family and word of mouth. The moms groups on Facebook have been wonderful for referrals too. I get a lot of clients from referrals which is wonderful!
How would someone get in touch with you if they want to learn more?
I have business cards, a Facebook page “Jackie’s Precious Pooches” and my cell is 440-669-3417.
This is a fun series! I’m always so amazed at people’s ability to find creative hobbies and side hustles. As a dog lover, this sounds like such a fun one!
Have you ever interviewed Gannon about what she does in ABA? I’d be curious to read about it since I’ve heard ABA can be harmful.
As a special educator, I have nothing but good things to say about ABA!
