Spread the love

I’ve pretty much been off of all social media since March and am loving it. One drawback, however, is that I’ve fallen out of touch with people. Perhaps I’ll be back eventually but for now, the hiatus has been great. I must say that I kind of love that the only people who know about my goings-on are the people who are actually in my life. Frankly, the questions I’ve gotten from people since I’ve been off have been very weird. I realized many people who I hadn’t spoken to or thought about in years thought we were “in touch” because they followed me on social… It’s just all very odd to me.

While the initial idea of taking the hiatus was a Lenten sacrifice, I’ve been SO glad to be off with the recent news. Abortion is an issue I will never be silent on and… I’ve already lost enough friends from my commenting on social issues on social media. It bothers me that only one side is “allowed” to have an opinion but I suppose the prevailing, more than slightly sensitive, opinion is the way of the world these days. It’s sad but it’s our reality.

Anyway, since people have been asking, I thought I would share a little life update in case you’re just DYING to know.

We attended my favorite charity event, the DC Brewer’s Ball.

… and I had an absolute blast… and sobbed at the same time. My family lost five people to Cystic Fibrosis between the 1950s and 1990s, one of which was my uncle and godfather. Being at the Brewer’s Ball was both fun and incredibly disorienting in a strange way. Many people who have CF have a sort of raspy way of speaking. It’s very unique and you would never know it unless you were looking for it. Well, at the Brewer’s Ball, a CF fighter got up and spoke and, holy smokes. His voice sounded like my uncle’s, which I hadn’t heard in nearly 30 years. Since he didn’t have children of his own, I’m determined to keep his memory alive and love that the CF Foundation does so many amazing and beautiful things for the community.

I spent the summer in Ohio.

For the third summer, I had the immense blessing of being able to spend the summer at my little lake condo. I woke up every morning to a gorgeous view of Lake Erie. We rode a Vietnam-era Huey helicopter (it scared the shit out of me). We got to ride on our friend’s boat. Cedar Point was a weekly occurrence. We went to the county fair. Many friends came to visit. It was relaxing and beautiful and I’m beyond grateful.

The photo at the top of this post is of the boys and me driving back from the summer… Even though we were only gone for two months, it truly felt like moving when we came back.. And I’m frankly still getting settled!

My business is booming.

I don’t mean to brag, but things are going very well. It’s nice to see that all of the late nights, cold calls and working tirelessly to serve my clients in the best way possible is really paying off.

I hung up my apron at the Farmer’s Market.

I told myself from day one that the minute the farmer’s market stops being fun, I’m quitting. That time came and, for the time being, I won’t be participating in any more. It’s a TON of work and it’s simply *not* my livelihood. I thought it was best to step aside and make room for the people who it’s more than a hobby for and I wish them all the luck in the world.

I’m thinking about my next car.

The last time I bought a car, I realized something very important about myself–I abhor having a car payment. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. So, I worked my tail off this summer to save for my next ride so that I can pay cash for it or finance very little. Do I need one for a while? No, this little baby Acura works just fine for me now so in the meantime, this dough will be sitting in a HYSA until I need it.

I conducted teacher trainings in three states(!!!)

.. and I’m exhausted. As I’m writing this, I just finished the last of my three in three consecutive weeks. Phew. Since August 13, I’ve been to North Carolina, Colorado and Massachusetts (with a side trip to New Hampshire and Maine). All the trainings went very well and I’m excited to work with the amazing schools!

I’m absolutely obsessed with genealogy.

I, quite literally for decades, have been dragging my feet about applying to the DAR. Well, I saw that some Junior League girls were also in DAR and I started the process. I knew that we had three Patriots in our family, but it’s likely that there are even more! What I did not know was how incredibly addicting family research can be! In addition to the American Revolution soldiers, I also found out that my great-great-great grandfather, George Thomas, fought in Pennsylvania’s 105th Regiment, nicknamed the Wildcat Regiment. Like any normal person who finds out this interesting family history, I took a solo trip to Gettysburg this past weekend (yes, in between airplane trips) to see his name on the Pennsylvania monument.

That’s about all for now… You’re caught up! I’m happy to be back in DC and look forward to catching up with friends soon!
