In honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, I thought I’d do a little post on practical tips my mom has given me over the years. Some of these are silly, but they are all very meaningful.
You can’t treat your friends like you do your family. So, this merits some explaining. I had a bit of a temper problem as a kid, and my mom always reminded me to reign it in with friends. Family is stuck with you.. Friends, not necessarily so much. While disagreements certainly happen within friendships, I’ve learned to not let them escalate to the level I do with family.
Use eye cream every night. This is her favorite. Oh, and make sure to dab with your ring finger. This liquid gold also works for severely chapped hands in the winter, but use sparingly because this ish is expensive as hell.
It’s important to support “small” business. Whether it be Stella and Dot, Arbonne, Mary Kay, Avon, or Pampered Chef, dammit, she’s hosted it. If you’re hosting a party, invite my mom along. She’ll have a few glasses of pinot grigio and buy the whole line. As far as actual small businesses go, she’s solicited every little kitschy gift shop in our hometown, as well as local restaurants. In Mom’s world, discounts don’t matter when you’re supporting a driven business person.
Never pass up a good time… Unless, of course, you’re too tired. It’s important to have a good time, but it’s also important to sleep. My mom is the life of the party when she’s there, but also values the 8-9 hours of sleep per night. I definitely could not agree more.
Be the “planner” of your friend group. This I definitely got from my mama. I like doing fun things, but I don’t like waiting around for other people to plan fun things. Likewise, organize events for things that need to happen. The photo below was from a charity fundraiser my mom threw for her friend who had cancer. Darrell passed away just a few months after this photo was taken, but it was beautiful to see so many people come together for him, all because she had the drive and energy to organize it.
Keep in touch with people from your past. So many people have commented on how many friends I have from childhood.. I have several people in my life that I’ve known since preschool, and this is largely due to learning my mom’s skills in keeping in touch with people. There’s something so cool and so unique in friendships that span the many stages of life we’ve been through.
Wishing you all a Happy Mother’s Day! I’m heading down to Florida for a quick trip to be with my mom and sister for the special day! Exciting!!!
