I genuinely, sincerely, whole-heartedly don’t know what I would do if I ever got a diagnosis for celiac disease.
No, I take that back. I know what I would do.
I would starve.
My three anti-drugs are: drinking beer, eating carbs and baking carb-loaded things… Sometimes all at once.
I briefly considered religious life when someone told me that there is an order of nuns in Europe that survives solely on beer through Lent.
Sign me up.
Gluten-free is also super trendy now for the people who aren’t celiac but want to watch their girlish figures. Perhaps my complete and utter abhorrence to this fad is the reason I am what they called in the mid-2000s “apple bottomed.” (cue boots with the fur).
At least I’m not miserable.
A relative’s recent celiac diagnosis got me thinking about how I need to not take my carb addiction for granted. If genetics do in fact play a role in a celiac diagnosis, perhaps my carb loading (or eating altogether) days are limited.
For this reason, I have made a firm amendment to fully appreciate gluten while I still can.
Lord, please never let my carb eating ability to go away.
All that being said, I think now is a good time to write a little tribute to carbs.. and share some of my favorite ways to load up on gluten.
1) Corcoran Vineyards… and Brewery?! WHAT?!?! Two of my favorite alcoholic bevies on one property? I hardly knew life could be so wonderful.
It’s a pain in the toosh to get to. I’m talking gravel roads, mountains, off-roading…
… But Oh. My. GOSH. sooo worth it.
Oh, wait. There’s more. On weekends, they serve BBQ. I recommend the brisket sandwich.. because, why not?
2) Buzz Bakery cupcakes… because.. well… we all know cupcakeries in DC can’t half-ass. Ever.
I’m sure I’ve blogged about it before, but I just really like it and thought I’d share again. Nothing beats a Keller Kolsch and Frickles (fried pickles. Duh).
4) Tried and true, one of my Pinterest gems.. Uh-mazing sugar cookies. I don’t recall putting crack in the cookie dough, but may very well have because, well, they’re addictive…
I made these for Valentine’s Day.. Obvi.. But they make great turkeys, Christmas trees, New Year’s horns, shamrocks, Easter eggs, sunshines, American flags and back-to-school cookies… There, I made it socially acceptable to make any time of the year, right?
Only in New York.
And I dream about it ever since being introduced at my friend’s bachelorette party.
Aaaaand, go figure, there aren’t any copycat recipes out there.
Guess I just need to go back to NYC next time I’m craving… Which will probably be tomorrow.. Jess, you up for another visiting weekend?? 🙂
I shall leave you with this Ode to Carbs written by a fellow blogger… She may or may not have made me laugh out loud.
Thank you, Lord for sparing me of celiac thus far. May it stay the hell away from me.
Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an extremely long comment but after
I clicked submit my comment didn’t show up.
Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyways, just wanted
to say fantastic blog!
