Few things I enjoy more than an afternoon in God’s country, doing a wine tasting and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  A few months ago, we ventured out to a winery I had heard of several times-Grey Ghost.  Even though I found it fun to try to convince my fellow wine tasters that it was named that because of a frequent apparition, it is in fact because of a nickname Abraham Lincoln gave to a Confederate soldier who was from Warrenton, VA, which is right down the street from the winery.

I won’t bore you with the nitty gritties of our experience, but I will say this: WHAT a class act.  The wines were INCREDIBLE (Seyval Blanc was my favorite). The wine pourers were some of the most well-versed I’ve ever seen, the selection was amazing, and the tasting itself was not at all over priced…  In my humble opinion, over priced wine tastings are the first sign that a winery’s wines are sub-par.

Don’t let the proximity to the road fool you like it did me.  I assumed if it was close to the road, it didn’t have much property, and therefore the grapes they used in their wine weren’t grown on property.  Wrong wrong wrong.  They grow all of their grapes, and the quality really shines forth.

Another perk?  The winery owners don’t get stingy with bringing your own picnic.  So, pack snacks (and water!), do a tasting, sit outside, and enjoy yourself.

Grey Ghost Winery quickly became one of my favorite Virginia Wineries.  I look forward to being there many other times this summer.  Perhaps I’ll see you there!
