One thing I never fully understood about my fellow human beings is the desire to take long vacations.

I can’t do it.

I get too antsy and want to get back home and see my dogs and work (because I’m that weirdo who genuinely loves working) and cook in my own kitchen and sleep in my own bed.

When it’s not a global pandemic, my perfect vacation length involves leaving Thursday morning and returning Monday early afternoon so I can unpack and do all my laundry before diving back in to work the next day.

Since it is a global pandemic, vacations aren’t much of a thing. We decided to take a quick jaunt to Rehoboth Beach. We left on Friday after work and were back in the DMV by 10 PM on Saturday. I personally thought it was a great length of time. We did everything we wanted to do (except for skeeball. Sigh).

Anyway, enjoy my little quick trip travel diary.

Dinner

Any time you have to drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on a Friday, it’s going to be bad. We got in to Rehoboth around 8:30 PM, which is later than I like to eat dinner, but we made the most of it. The unassuming Summer House was actually DELICIOUS. I loved the tacos I got and the beer (see below) was amazing.

Jim really liked his burger too.

After dinner drinks

If you’re concerned about crowded bars, don’t worry a bit about Rehoboth. People are clearly too afraid to go out (which I get). However, coming from a restaurant family, I feel terrible for the business owners and hope they can recoup soon.

Stop One: Purple Parrot: I have such a thing for dive bars and Purple Parrot didn’t disappoint. I had an Orange Crush there (obvi… #IYKYK) and loved the fun, beachy vibe.

Stop two: Nalu Surf Bar and Grill: Talk about a fantastic selection of Kona Beers, which happens to be one of Jim’s faves. I had an Orange Crush because, again….

Morning Coffee

Mug and Spoon was all I’ve ever dreamed of in a coffee shop and more. Oh MY GOSH is it cute inside. If I ever opened a coffee shop (which I have no intention of doing, but still), I would plagiarize everything they did. The cold brew was uh-mazing. The ambiance was everything and, even though I didn’t try it, the ice cream looked incredible.

Beach/Boardwalk Favorites

I wish I could have snapped a picture of it, but we saw both dolphin AND pelicans! I loooooove pelicans and had never seen them this far north, so needless to say, I was super excited.

Starkey’s Ice Cream: Such a staple on the boardwalk. It’s not the best ice cream you’ll ever have but it’s still pretty darn good.

Dolle’s Popcorn: If you go to Rehoboth for no other reason than to get Dolle’s Popcorn, it’s worth it. Just make sure you opt for the caramel corn with peanuts because it’s the BEST.

Lunch

We enjoyed lunch at the new Kiwi’s Tiki Hut. The food was uh-mazing and I loved the drinks there too. I’ll be dreaming about those chicken kabobs for a long time to come. YUM.

Drive Back

If you’re coming from DC, listen carefully– set your GPS to Elmer’s Farm Market when you leave Rehoboth and make a pitstop on your way. Not only is it a fun way to break up the drive a bit, but the produce that they sell is incredible and WAY cheaper than the farmer’s markets in DC. Get your fruits and veggies for the week and viola! … one less thing you have to do when you get back home.

Am I missing anything major about a Rehoboth trip? There’s also a ton of shopping but a) I’m not shopping for clothes again until December 1 and b) we didn’t have time. For those of you who have been, I’d love to know what else you love there! Happy Tuesday!
